We are thrilled to welcome Ms Rumiko Obata, fifth-generation owner of Obata Shuzo, in an intimate masterclass exclusive to BSA members.

Date: Saturday, 11th February 2023
Time: 12pm – 2pm
Tickets: £48
Location: Moto, 7 Maiden Ln, London WC2E 7NA
Obata Shuzo is a sake brewery on the beautiful and historic Sado Island off the coast of Niigata Prefecture. They are most known for their award-winning ‘Manotsuru’ brand of sake as well as their ‘Gakkogura‘ sake brewing school.
For those not yet in the know, this popular week-long sustainable sake brewing experience is the only one of its kind in the world, offered for the past few years at Obata Brewery’s Gakkogura (literally “Brewery School”) on Sado Island.
If you had already heard of Gakkogura and wanted to know more from Ms Obata herself or had wanted to get some hands-on experience in sake brewing but didn’t know where to start, this masterclass is one not to be missed! Gakkogura alumni will also be present to provide a personal angle to better understand this special initiative.

We will also be delving into the rest of Ms Obata’s initiatives that have helped make Obata Shuzo one of the most groundbreaking breweries in the Japanese sake market today.
This masterclass will be held at Moto, the U.K.’s first independent Japanese Sake Bar, Shop & Eatery in Covent Garden.
During the masterclass, we will enjoy:
- Manotsuru Miku Junmai Daiginjo
- Manotsuru Mai Mai Junmai
- KANADEL Junmai Daiginjo Orikarami (brewed by previous Gakkogura participants)
- KANADEL Junmai Ginjo Kimoto (brewed by previous Gakkogura participants)
- Moto Obento Lunch Box (vegan, vegetarian, pork, or chicken options are available – we will confirm your order after booking)
