CONGRATULATIONS to our chairman Marie Cheong-Thong on becoming a Sake Samurai.
Never was an accolade so well-deserved, or so appropriately named. Marie has proved herself a fearless warrior in the quest to further understanding of sake outside of Japan. In the UK and beyond she has worked tirelessly to help the British Sake Association fulfil its aims, and to increase its reach and activities. All of us at the BSA are incredibly proud of what she has achieved, both through us, and for us; but most importantly for the sake industry and brewers of Japan.
Marie’s award adds to the impressive list of sake qualifications held by all of our committee and board members, all of whom work on a voluntary basis.
Now in its 19th year, the title of Sake Samurai is awarded to only a select handful of individuals annually, recommended by The Japan Sake Brewers Association Junior Council. The title recognises those who have made outstanding contributions to the understanding, appreciation, or promotion of sake. Following the upcoming inauguration of the four new Sake Samurai for 2024, the total recipients of this award will stand at 105 individuals globally.
