PRESS RELEASE: Henry Thorogood Named Honorary Secretary

26 July 2024, London

The British Sake Association (“BSA”) has announced the promotion of Henry Thorogood to the newly created position of Honorary Secretary. In this role, Thorogood will be responsible for identifying and executing new growth initiatives for the BSA, working directly with BSA Chairman, Marie Cheong-Thong.

Since first joining the Association in December 2021, Thorogood has served as its Operations & Events Officer, during which time he spearheaded the improvement of the BSA’s internal workflows and systems. Thorogood also developed and coordinates the popular Study Group events program, which offers BSA Members a chance to build their theoretical knowledge and analytical tasting abilities of Japanese sake in a friendly and supportive environment.

Thorogood will continue to work closely with the BSA Board (Shirley Booth, President; Marie
Cheong-Thong, Chairman; Brian Smith, Company Secretary and Treasurer) and other members of the Committee (Sarah Stewart, Memberships & Events Officer; Harriet Furze, Website & Events Officer; Erika Haigh, Corporate Partnerships Officer; Oliver Hilton-Johnson, Education Officer), all of whom are volunteers, to further the Association’s aims.

Founded in 2006, The British Sake Association is a not-for-profit organisation providing
opportunities for Members and non-Members to taste a wide range of sake, and to meet sake brewers and others working in the global sake community. The BSA works to promote the understanding and enjoyment of sake, strengthen and preserve the traditions of sake-making, and act as a cultural conduit between Britain and Japan.
